General characteristics of breed

ITALIAN HISTORY OF THE BREED

The direct ancestor of the breed is the ancient Roman Molossian dog. In the past it used to be widespread in whole Italy, in the recent past  its most characteristic spread area is the province of Apulia and the neighbouring areas of Southern Italy. The name of the breed comes from the Latin word ’cohors’ which means guard, defender (a guard of farms, courts).

A WELL-BALANCED BEHAVIOR AND A CALM TEMPERAMENT

Its original task is watching an area, a family, animals, it is especially mobile and teachable.

A ROBUST APPEARANCE

It is a medium to large-sized breed. It is a robust and strong breed but it is elegant, lean and it has strong muscles.

HEAD: It is big and typically molossoid. The top axis of the skull is slightly convergent with the nasal bridge, without wrinkles.

SKULL: It is wide with  cheekbone arches. Its width is equal  to its length. It is convex in front and it is getting flatter from the part behind the forehead to the occiput. The middle, frontal sulcus can be seen from the beginning of the stop and ends in the middle of vault.

Stop: it is expressed, prominent with frontal sinus.

VISCEROCRANIUM:

Nose: It is black. A grey mask of a similar shade is allowed. A large nose with open nostrils. Nose is situated in the line of nasal bridge.

Muzzle: It is robust, square and shorter than the vault. The ratio of vault to viscerocranium is 2:1. The frontal part of the muzzle is flat, its lateral surfaces are parallel, and it is as wide as it is long. From the side, it is deep. The profile of the nasal bridge is linear..

Lips: Upper lips form a turned „U” shape in their meeting point, from the side they moderately hang. They cover bottom lips and determine the bottom profile of muzzle.

Chinbone, jaw, teeth: the chin and the jaw are big, sizeable, thick, and arched. A tight forward bite but it is not bigger than 5 mm. Masticatory muscles are distinct but not convex.

Eyes: They are middle-sized, slightly convex but never extremely. They are close to egg-shape, they are expressly far from each other, they are situated nearly under forehead. Eyelids close tightly. The colour of iris is as dark as possible adjusting to the tone of hairs. The eyes are watchful and attentive.

Ears: They are triangular, hanging, middle-sized, they are pinned widely much above the arch of cheekbone. They are not cut.

NECK: It is robust, well-muscled, its length is equal to the length of head.

BODY:

The body length exceeds the height at the withers; it is well-built but not square.

Withers: They are prominent ,and above the line of buttock.

Back: It is straight, well-muscled and tense.

Groin: It is short and strong.

Buttock: It is long , wide and slightly round.

Chest: It is well-developed, it reaches the elbow.

TAIL: It is natural. It is rather highly pinned, it is pretty thick in  the root. It is held high when moving but never vertical or ring-shaped.

FRONTAL LIMBS:

Shoulder: It is long, sloped and pretty well-muscled.

Overarm: It is straight and very robust.

Joint:It is flexible.

Tarso metatarsus:It is flexible and slightly slanted.

Paws: They are like cats’ paws.

BACK LIMBS:

Tigh: It is long  and wide, the back line of tigh is convex.

Leg: It is strong and not flashy.

Knee: It is solid, moderatly angled.

Hock joint: It is moderately angled.

Back tarso-metatarsus:It is thick and dry.

Back paws: They are less compact than frontal paws.

WAY OF WALK/MOVEMENT: A big pace, a drawn jogging, prefered way of walk is jogging.

SKIN: It is rather thick and tense.

HAIRS: They are short, shiny, very thick with some glassy underhair.

Colour: Black, lead-grey, slate-grey, light grey, dark yellow, fawn-colour (stripes on the he different shades of yellow and grey). The mask of yellow and stripped dogs can not reach behind the line of eyes. A little white spot on chest, on tips of toes or on nasal bridge are accepted.
